Anthony Zarate Memorial Scholarship

Presented annually to an outstanding student at the Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast in May of each year.

This scholarship is designed to support a student planning on attending a 4-year college or continuing with undergraduate studies and is privately funded by the Western Wind Foundation.

The Anthony Zarate Memorial Scholarship is presented to an outstanding youth selected from all students participating in Coachella Valley GSAs. The recipient will be a student who demonstrates leadership, and is involved with other youth in the community. The student (usually senior or a freshman) must excel or show the ability to excel academically. Preference is given to those who have struggled with anti-gay challenges in their environment from religion, culture, and family. Each student demonstrates the power to rise above oppressive social and economic circumstances.

Now Accepting Applications for 2020-2021 School Year
Application Deadline: January 31, 2020

Awards in this category are intended to provide support for educational expenses for your enrollment in a college or university you choose, including private colleges or out-of-state schools.

Acceptable expenses will typically include:

  • Tuition, course fees
  • On campus living expenses
  • Books and other educational materials
  • Computers used for coursework
  • Other costs directly related to enrollment in an educational program

If you are eligible, you may receive $2,500. Safe Schools Desert Cities will administer the award in this category and only one award will be granted per school year.

This is not a competitive award. Students must demonstrate a commitment to their continued education. Recipients will be selected on the basis of their application, essay they write and feedback from teachers and advisors.

Award will be presented at the Palm Springs Convention Center during the Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast in May 2020
