SUMMARY:Spirit Day 2018
DESCRIPTION:Millions go purple on Spirit Day in a stand against bullying and to show their support for lesbian\, gay\, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth. Observed annually since 2010\, individuals\, schools\, organizations\, corporations\, and public figures wear purple\, which symbolizes ‘spirit’on the rainbow flag. \nCheck out photos and videos from last year’s Spirit Day! \n \nabout #spiritday\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Spirit Day?\nSpirit Day began in 2010 as a way to show support for LGBT youth and take a stand against bullying.  Following a string of high-profile suicide deaths of gay teens in 2010\, GLAAD worked to involve millions of teachers\, workplaces\, celebrities\, media outlets and students in going purple on social media or wearing purple\, a color that symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag.  Spirit Day now occurs every year on the third Thursday in October\, during National Bullying Prevention Month\, and has become the most visible day of support for LGBT youth. \nThis year GLAAD will celebrate Spirit Day on October 16 where we will all stand together; communities\, corporations\, celebrities\, landmarks\, faith groups\, sports leagues\, schools and so much more\, to send a message of solidarity and acceptance to LGBT youth. \nWhere did the idea come from?\nAn amazing teenager wanted to remember those young people who lost their lives to suicide and to take a stand against bullying. \nWho participates?\nStudents\, schools\, organizations\, corporations\, media professionals\, celebrities\, parents and many more. Everyone from Oprah to Cher to Facebook and MTV have gone purple for Spirit Day. Even the White House joined the cause! \nHow do I get involved?\nIt’s easy! The first step – pledge to go purple now! The official GLAAD Presents #SpiritDay campaign kicks off in September with new and exciting ways to participate\, spread the word and stand up against bullying!

SUMMARY:Coming Out Day (National Event) - 2018
DESCRIPTION:National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is an annual LGBTQawareness day observed on October 11.  Founded in the United States in 1988\, the initial idea was grounded in the feminist and gay liberation spirit of the personal being political\, and the emphasis on the most basic form of activism being coming out to family\, friends and colleagues\, and living life as an openly lesbian or gay person.  The foundational belief is that homophobia thrives in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance\, and that once people know that they have loved ones who are lesbian or gay\, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic or oppressive views. \nIn more recent years\, the idea of the “Lesbian and Gay Community” has been largely subsumed into the idea of the LGBT community\, and the idea of “coming out” expanded to not only include the voluntary self-disclosure of a lesbian\, gay\, or bisexual sexual orientation\, but also transgender\, genderqueer\, or other non-mainstream gender identity.

SUMMARY:San Diego Pride Parade & Festival - 2018
DESCRIPTION:** BUS TRIP CANCELLED **\nStudents & Parents\,\nPlease accept our apology for the regretful but necessary cancelation of the bus trip to San Diego Pride on July 14th. The low registration numbers did not support the huge cost of transportation and logistics for an event of this nature.  All deposits paid will be immediately refunded to the credit card used during registration. \nWe are grateful for your interest and willingness to march with us and we share in the disappointment of not being able to participate in the parade. However\, we look forward to being back stronger than ever before\, in July 2019\, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall. \nThanks for your understanding\,\nBoard of Directors\nSafe Schools Desert Cities

SUMMARY:Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast - 2018
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Greater Palm Springs Pride\, Equality California and the Coachella Valley Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast Coalition \nFriday\, May 18\, 2018 \n9:30-11:00 am (Registration begins at 8:45am\, Program begins at 9:30am sharp) \nPalm Springs Convention Center\, 277 N. Avenida Caballeros \nOpen to all – this event is for individuals\, businesses\, interfaith groups\, civic officials and nonprofit organizations. \n  \nABOUT HARVEY MILK\nWhen he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977\, Harvey Milk (1930- 1978) became one of the first openly gay men to be elected to political office in the United States. On election night\, Harvey Milk reminded his supporters: “This is not my victory – it’s yours. If a gay man can win\, it proves that there is hope for all minorities who are willing to fight.” He was assassinated (along with Mayor George Moscone) on November 27\, 1978\, only eleven months after taking office. Although he did not live to see his dreams fulfilled\, the example of his life and leadership has made him an important national symbol for the struggle for human rights. \nProceeds benefit Coachella Valley youth through Gay-Straight Alliance clubs and LGBT youth related programs. \n

SUMMARY:Day of Silence - 2018
DESCRIPTION:About GLSENs Day of Silence\n\n\n\n\n\nGLSENs Day of Silence is a national day of action in which students across the country vow to take a form of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. \n\n\n\n\n\nHistory\n\n\n\n\n\nFounded in 1996\, the Day of Silence has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all\, regardless of sexual orientation\, gender identity or gender expression. From the first-ever Day of Silence at the University of Virginia in 1996\, to the organizing efforts in over 8\,000 middle schools\, high schools\, colleges and universities across the country in 2008\, its textured history reflects its diversity in both numbers and reach.\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizing for Day of Silence\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizing a Day of Silence (DOS) activity or event can be a positive tool for change-both personally and community-wide. By taking a vow of silence\, you’re making a powerful statement about the important issue of anti-LGBT bullying\, and when you organize others to join you that message becomes stronger. Discover ways of organizing your event here. \n\n\n\n\n\nYour Rights\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile you DO have a right to participate in GLSENs Day of Silence between classes and before and after school\, you may NOT have the right to stay silent during instructional time if a teacher requests for you to speak. According to Lambda Legal\, “Under the Constitution\, public schools must respect students’ right to free speech. The right to speak includes the right not to speak\, as well as the right to wear buttons or T-shirts expressing support for a cause.” However\, this right to free speech doesn’t extend to classroom time. “If a teacher tells a student to answer a question during class\, the student generally doesn’t have a constitutional right to refuse to answer.” We remind participants that students who talk with their teachers ahead of time are more likely to be able to remain silent during class.  Find more Lambda Legal advice here.\n\n\n\n\n\nLegal Help: Report It! \n\n\n\n\n\nIf you think your rights are not being respected\, or want to report your experience of resistant administration\, click here to report it. GLSEN and Lambda Legal will review your situation.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Truth about the Day of Silence\n\n\n\n\n\nAs GLSENs Day of Silence continues to grow\, some people have confused the mission and goals of the Action. Clear up any misinformation by reading The Truth about the Day of Silence.
